Vioworks: Frequently Asked Questions

Support Response:
1. I am attempting to open a presentation but, when I click on the "View" button, either nothing happens or I see a window briefly appear and then close. Why is this happening?

This is most likely occurring because of pop-up blocking software (this type of software is sometimes included as a part of anti-virus or firewall installations) which is preventing the Vioworks.com Web Site from opening a Vioworks Player Console window. To view presentations you will need to give the Vioworks.com Web Site permission to open pop-up windows on your machine. This is perfectly safe and Vioworks.com will not open any pop-up advertisements.

Disabling Pop-up Blocking Software:
Pop-up blocking software can sometimes be temporarily disabled by holding the "Ctrl" key down on your keyboard. Try to click the "View" button while holding the "Ctrl" key down. If this does not work, please consult the help reference of your pop-up blocking, anti-virus, or firewall software.

Disabling Internet Explorer Pop-ups in Windows XP with SP 2
Note: Users with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 will automatically have a pop-up blocking feature added to Microsoft Internet Explorer. Make sure to click the Information Bar and choose "Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site" or "Temporarily Allow Pop-ups" from the drop down menu.

2. I am attempting to view a presentation using your VioPlayer but nothing seems to be happening. How do I get the VioPlayer to launch?

If this occurs, please check the System Requirements to make sure your system configuration and web browser are supported. This most often happens for users of Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed. Service Pack 2 is an update to the Windows XP operating system which adds security features that may interfere with the operation of the VioPlayer. You must enable ActiveX controls to view the presentation using VioPlayer.

Enabling ActiveX Controls in Internet Explorer for Windows XP with Service Pack 2:
Step 1. First, after clicking the button to launch the VioPlayer, Internet Explorer will display a yellow Information Bar at the top of the web page. Make sure to click the Information Bar and choose "Install ActiveX Control" from the drop-down menu.

Click "Install ActiveX Control" from the drop down on the yellow Information Bar

Step 2. Next, choose "Install" from the Internet Explorer Security Warning dialogue box that will appear. This gives the Vioworks web site permission to install VioPlayer (our presentation software) on your computer. The VioPlayer should now start.

Make sure to click "Install" on the Internet Explorer Security Warning dialogue box

3. What are the system requirements for viewing Vioworks on-line presentations?

PC users need:
Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP, a 28.8K or faster Internet connection, a sound card, the free MS Internet Explorer (version 6 or above) or Netscape Navigator (version 7 or above) and the free Windows Media Player or RealPlayer software.

Macintosh users need:
Vioworks presentations will only work if your browser is Netscape Navigator 7.02 for Macintosh OS-X (no other version will work) and your media selection is RealPlayer.

Go to these links to get the software you need for Windows or Macintosh.

4. The system setup check says my system is ready, but no video shows up when I launch a presentation.

This is usually caused by a network configuration which does not allow streaming media. You may have to contact your organization's network administrator to make sure that users are allowed to view streaming RealMedia and Windows Media content.

(Note: If you are on the Johnson and Johnson Corporate Network, here are the instructions for configuring your system to view streaming media files from Vioworks.com.)

5. The system setup check says my "cookies" are disabled. What does this mean?

Cookies are small files (typically less than 1K) that are stored on your computer to help a web site function. Vioworks stores a cookie on your machine when you log on to our site. This allows us to make sure you are a registered member when you launch a presentation.

6.

I logged on to Vioworks with a valid Logon ID and Password but in the Conferences section I still see the yellow "Notice" telling me I am not logged in.

If this is occurring, it is likely that your browser cookies are disabled. Although we try to detect this problem and warn you about it, detection does not work on some systems. 7. What versions of Netscape Navigator work with Vioworks content?

Vioworks supports Netscape Navigator 7.1 and up only. If you are a Windows user with Internet Explorer 5 or above installed, that is the browser we recommend. We suggest users who prefer Navigator simply download and install Netscape Navigator 7.1 (this will not interfere with other Netscape Navigator versions already installed on your computer).

Download Netscape Navigator 7 for Windows.

Download Netscape Navigator 7 for Macintosh.

8. Does Vioworks work under Macintosh OS X?

Yes, however, due to limitations in the implementation of Windows Media Player on the Macintosh, Vioworks presentations will only work if your browser is Netscape Navigator 7.02 for Macintosh OS-X (no other version will work) and your media selection is RealPlayer.

9. The video/audio stream seems to get distorted or stop occasionally. Why is this happening?

The Internet is a computer network being used by millions of people simultaneously. Due to this high amount of network traffic, users may experience a temporary slowdown in the rate of data being sent to their computer. This will manifest itself as a distortion or blacking out of the video/audio portion of a presentation and the message "Connecting" or "Buffering" appearing in the media player's status area. Users with Internet connections faster than a 56K modem will generally not experience these problems.

10. Do other web browsers (FireFox, Opera, Safari, etc.) work with Vioworks?

Not at this time. The Vioworks development team has focused most of its effort in eliminating issues that affect the greatest number of users (Internet Explorer and Netscape users). However, we are currently investigating support of additional platforms.
